Half window blinds and café shutters: choosing lower-window privacy

“Half window blinds” can describe several different products. The useful starting point is the result you want: screening at street level while leaving daylight above. Café shutters cover the lower part of the window permanently; other blinds may offer adjustable coverage, depending on their mechanism.

Café shutters and tier-on-tier are different

Café shutters stop at an agreed height and leave the upper glass uncovered. You can tilt the lower louvres or open the lower panels. They do not provide full-window screening at night.

Tier-on-tier shutters cover the full window with separate upper and lower panels. Opening the top tier can give a similar daytime effect, while keeping the option to close both tiers. The extra horizontal division and opening panels need space.

Check the view from outside

The right height depends on the pavement, the window sill and where people sit or stand inside. A low sash meeting rail may be a useful visual reference, but it is not automatically the correct privacy line. Discuss the sightline during a survey, particularly for raised ground floors or rooms below street level.

Privacy also changes with lighting. Test the arrangement when the room is lit after dark. If upper glass must be screened, consider full-height coverage or a compatible curtain or blind as part of the design.

Compare an adjustable blind

A standard roller blind normally travels down from the top. A Venetian blind tilts its slats but is not the same as fixed lower-half coverage. Ask specifically about the operating position you need, the available product and where its controls sit. See our blinds range for the starting options.

Choose the fixing method only after checking handles, recess depth, ventilation and the window’s opening direction. Do not assume an adhesive or no-drill fitting suits every frame.
