Choose the shutter style first

Full height shutters can give a simple outline behind curtains. Tier-on-tier shutters let you open the upper panels separately, so check that neither tier catches the fabric. Café shutters leave glass exposed above; consider whether that suits your privacy needs after dark.

Fabric and colour combinations

White or neutral shutters with coloured curtains: the fabric can be the main accent without changing the shutter finish.
Similar tones: compare physical samples together in daylight to avoid an unintended mismatch.
Linen-like textures: a relaxed fabric can soften the lines of the panels.
Heavier fabrics: velvet or lined curtains create a fuller frame; allow for their larger stack and suitable support.
Sheers: these add a light layer, but should not be assumed to provide privacy with indoor lights on.

Bedrooms and light control

Shutters reduce light when closed, but small gaps around the frame and louvres can remain. A suitably designed lined curtain may help with room darkening. Discuss the fabric, lining, track position and edge gaps together rather than treating blackout fabric alone as a guarantee of a completely dark room.

In a living room, think about the view from a sofa as well as the pavement. You may prefer closed lower louvres for privacy while leaving the curtains stacked clear. In a bay, confirm the angles, shutter opening paths and proposed curtain track as one arrangement.

Floor-length fabric can create a continuous line, but it must suit the room’s access, heating and cleaning needs. Keep fabric clear of heat sources and follow the relevant product instructions.

Care and practical checks

Dust the shutters with a soft cloth and follow the instructions for their finish. Clean curtains according to the fabric label. Keep fabric from catching in hinges, and check that any cords or chains have the required child-safety fittings.
