Edwardian shutter designs: choosing a layout for a period home

Shutters in an Edwardian home work best when their panel divisions follow the window rather than cutting across it. Start with the glazing bars, opening sashes and any original joinery, then decide how much privacy each part of the window needs.

Match the layout to the window

A tall sash window often suits full-height panels with a horizontal division aligned to the meeting rail. A bay needs each section measured separately: the corner angles determine the frame arrangement and where the panels can fold. A photograph is useful for an initial discussion, but it cannot replace a survey.

Check handles, sash locks and the depth of the recess. The shutters should allow you to operate the window, clean the glass and reach any ventilation controls. Furniture, radiators and curtain poles can restrict how far panels open.

Choose the coverage you need

• Full height gives continuous coverage and a simple outline.
• Tier-on-tier lets the upper and lower panels open independently. Allow enough room for both sets to fold.
• Café shutters screen the lower window while leaving the upper glass uncovered. Consider the view into the room after dark.
• Solid panels create a different appearance and do not offer adjustable louvres across their solid sections.
