Sugar soap before painting: preparation, rinsing and shutter care
Sugar soap is a cleaning product commonly used to remove grease and grime before decorating. It is not a wood treatment, an adhesive or a necessary first step when fitting every type of shutter. Whether it is suitable depends on the surface, its existing finish and the instructions for the particular cleaner.
Check the label and the surface
Products sold as sugar soap vary in formulation and concentration. Use the dilution, protective equipment, application method and rinsing instructions on your own product. Do not transfer a mixing ratio from an unrelated brand or from a concentrate to a ready-to-use spray.
For example, Selleys describes its Sugar Soap Original as a surface cleaner for paint preparation and gives product-specific precautions. Its guidance does not establish that every sugar-soap product is safe on every painted shutter or metal fitting.
Preparing a wall or window surround for painting
Check that the cleaner is suitable for the substrate and existing coating. Protect nearby finishes, test a small inconspicuous area, and follow both the cleaner’s instructions and the paint manufacturer’s preparation guidance. Where rinsing is required, remove the cleaning residue and allow the surface to dry before continuing.
Cleaning does not repair loose paint, damaged plaster, rot or persistent damp. Identify those problems separately before decorating. Do not mix cleaning products.
Cleaning finished wooden shutters
Start with the shutter supplier’s care instructions. A finished shutter has moving joints, a coated surface and hardware; it should not be treated as a bare wall awaiting paint. Do not use sugar soap, solvents, abrasive pads or other strong cleaners unless the manufacturer explicitly permits them for that finish.
For routine dust, a soft dry cloth or an appropriate soft brush is usually the simplest starting point. If the care instructions allow a lightly damp cloth, avoid soaking the wood or leaving moisture around hinges and joints. Test any permitted cleaner discreetly first.
Fitting shutters is a separate job
A shutter frame needs the specified mechanical support and fixings. Cleaning a wall does not make adhesive a suitable substitute. Follow the selected system’s survey and installation requirements.
