Soundproof window shutters: what indoor shutters can and cannot do
Ordinary indoor plantation shutters should not be sold as soundproofing. They have joints, moving panels and gaps around the louvres. We do not have a product-specific acoustic test that supports a promised decibel reduction for this range.
Start with the route the noise takes
Traffic noise may enter through the glazing, gaps in the window assembly, ventilation openings or other parts of the building. Adding a shutter does not identify or fix those routes. If quieter rooms are the main objective, ask a qualified window or acoustic specialist to assess the existing window before buying a treatment on that basis.
Record when the problem occurs and which room is affected. A steady road hum, nearby conversation and intermittent low-frequency noise are different problems. This helps a specialist explain what improvement is realistic and how it would be measured.
Choose shutters for their supported functions
Full-height shutters provide adjustable screening across the window. Tier-on-tier panels allow separate upper and lower opening. Solid shutters give a different appearance, but a solid panel alone is not evidence of an acoustic rating.
During the survey, check that the chosen frame leaves handles and ventilation usable. Closing a vent solely to make a room quieter can create a separate ventilation problem; agree any window changes with the relevant specialist.
Be careful with percentage claims
A figure from another product or a laboratory window assembly does not establish how these shutters will perform in your room. Ask for the named product, test arrangement and limitations behind any acoustic claim. Do not treat a general testimonial as a measurement.
Discuss light and privacy separately
We can help you compare panel layouts, finishes and louvre sizes for your room. Our wooden shutters start from £240/m², carry a 10-year guarantee and have a typical 3–4-week lead time. These terms do not imply a soundproofing guarantee. Book a consultation for a measured shutter specification.
