Tier-on-tier shutter styles for North London homes

Tier-on-tier shutters have separate upper and lower panels. You can open the top panels to uncover the glass while keeping the lower panels closed for privacy. The best design depends on your window rails, the view from outside and how often you want to open the panels.

Start with the panel layout

On a tall sash window, placing the horizontal split near an existing window rail can give the design a balanced appearance. Check the privacy height from your usual seat as well as standing. In a bay, consider all sections together so their rails line up where practical.

Tier-on-tier adds a horizontal meeting rail. On a short window this may look busy; full height shutters with a split tilt can be worth comparing. Split tilt lets you adjust upper and lower groups of louvres independently, but the panels themselves remain full height.

White, neutral or a colour match?

White shutters can sit quietly alongside white frames and many wall colours. Cream and other neutral finishes need checking against the existing paintwork in daylight: two similar shades can look different next to each other. A stronger colour can make the window a feature, particularly in a room with simpler furnishings.

Ask to see physical finish samples during your home visit. The selected colour and any colour-matching requirements should appear in your quote. Do not rely on a phone screen for the final choice.

Louvres, controls and opening space

• Compare louvre samples from both inside and outside the room.
• Choose the control position with everyday access in mind.
• Check where both tiers will swing or fold; handles, curtain poles and furniture can restrict movement.
• Leave the required access to opening windows and ventilation.
