DIY window shutters: what to check before measuring or fitting
DIY window shutters can mean fitting a manufactured kit or making the panels yourself. Those are different projects. A made-to-measure kit still needs accurate survey information and suitable fixings; building working louvred panels adds joinery, alignment and hardware requirements.
Decide what the supplier is providing
Ask whether the quotation includes frames, hinges, catches, installation instructions and the fixings appropriate to your wall or window surround. Confirm who is responsible for the measurements and how an error would be handled before ordering.
A decorative board-and-batten project is not a substitute for a tested, working indoor plantation-shutter system. Do not treat a generic list of plywood, glue and hinges as a complete specification for every window.
Survey the opening, not just the glass
Follow the selected product’s measurement instructions. Check width and height at the specified positions, the squareness of the opening, recess depth and the surface that will support the frame. Record handles, locks, vents and any projecting trim.
Bays, angled windows and doors need additional design decisions. Panel width, corner posts and folding direction affect how the shutters operate. Stop and obtain a professional survey if you cannot establish the required details confidently.
Plan safe fixing and access
The fixing method depends on the substrate and the product. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and check for concealed services before drilling. Do not rely on decorative trim to support a heavy assembly without confirming that it is suitable. Keep the window’s required opening and ventilation accessible.
Before final tightening, check frame alignment, panel gaps, catches and louvre movement in the sequence specified by the supplier. A frame pulled out of square can prevent a correctly made panel from operating.
Compare the complete cost
Allow for tools, delivery, finishing, your time and potential rework. A DIY price and a surveyed installation quote may cover different things. Compare the written scope rather than only the panel price.
For our made-to-measure wooden shutter range, prices start from £240/m² with a 10-year guarantee and a typical 3–4-week lead time. Book a consultation to discuss a measured specification and what the quote includes.
