Exterior window shutters: how they differ from indoor plantation shutters
Exterior shutters sit outside the glazing. Indoor plantation shutters sit inside the room. They need different materials, finishes, hardware and fixing details, so an indoor shutter should never be assumed suitable for external use.
Decorative or functional?
A decorative external panel may be fixed beside the opening and never close across the window. A functional external shutter needs working hinges or tracks, secure retaining hardware and adequate clearance. Confirm which type is being discussed before comparing a quotation.
External designs can include louvred panels, solid boards and other arrangements. Their suitability depends on the building, exposure and the manufacturer’s specification. A photograph showing a style does not demonstrate that it is suitable for a particular window.
Ask for evidence of weather or security claims
Do not rely on an unsupported wind-speed, security or insulation promise. Request the named product’s technical information and any applicable test evidence. Fixings must suit the actual wall and expected loads; the survey should consider the substrate, access and the way an open shutter is retained.
A shutter that looks substantial is not automatically a certified security product. Likewise, a paint finish described as durable is not proof that an indoor timber panel is weatherproof.
Consider maintenance and the building
Agree how the finish, hinges and retaining hardware will be maintained and inspected. On older buildings, take care with original masonry, surrounds and existing shutter details. Historic England’s window guidance is a useful starting point when historic features are involved.
Our interior shutter range
